The Character fu has the meaning of good fortune and happiness in Chinese. You see it as a decoration everywhere in China: on doors, windows, paintings, tea pots, rice bowl even rings.
During Chinese new year the "福fú" character is often hung upside-down. This is because the word for "upside-down", is "倒dào " in Chinese and it has the same pronunciation as the word for " arrive" which is pronounced "到dào " in Chinese.
So fu character is hung upside-down, in Chinese we say:
Fú dào le.
福倒了.
It has the similar pronunciation of the sentence:
Fú dào le
福到了
It means good fortune or happiness arrives.
